Trail "Vulcanetto di Mojo"

On foot         Great Interest: Wildlife Great Interest: Geology Great Interest: Panorama
  • Departure: Mojo Alcantara (Mojo Alcantara)
  • Difficulty Level: rather demanding
  • Involved Municipalities: Mojo Alcantara

Not far from the town of Mojo Alcantara, you will find this small volcanic cone, no longer active, about 700m high.
To reach the beginning of the trail, go along an ancient quarry of volcanic sand - "u rinazzu" - where you can observe the different colors characterizing the various pyroclastic deposits. The beginning of the itinerary is marked by specific panels, near a rural building.

The path develops along the small volcano reaching the summit of the crater and covering the whole perimeter. From here you can admire a landscape of peerless beauty: the Etna's majestic massive shape, the Alcantara river's valley, the Nebrodi and Peloritani mountain chains. Within the crater there is a rich vegetation giving shelter to rabbits, foxes and other animals: it often happens that people find the quills lost by some specimen of crested porcupines, while among the branches the blue tits sing. Considering the wide view visitors can enjoy from the summit, it is also possible to sight some common buzzards spinning around the valley.
